I had an energy healing treatment….and it was the most unique experience of my life
Full disclaimer, I’m not a big believer in crystals, palm readings, aura’s or really any alternative therapy. I’m definitely not opposed to it, I guess I’ve just never been exposed to it.
So, when I was invited into Face Plus Bondi Beach to try their new muscular energy massage, I was excited but kind of sceptical. I’m the sort of person that’s only ever had massages at the Thai stores in shopping centres. I’m used to a quick, generic treatment so I’ve had limited experience when it comes to a professional, luxurious service. The Face Plus team wanted me to come in, try a 90-minute bespoke muscular, energy massage and write an honest recap of my experience. It sounded like a win win for me, so I set out to Bondi Beach with an open mind and tired body, ready to see what all the fuss was about.
When I arrived at Face Plus Bondi Beach, the team greeted me with a glass of herbal tea and sat me in a quiet and beautifully styled waiting room. Having only ever had facials at Face Plus Bondi Junction I was surprised at how different the vibe was down here. It didn’t feel like a medi-clinic, rather a very zen spa that transported me straight to Byron Bay. All the staff and clients moved around gracefully and spoke in hush whispers. It certainly set the tone for my chilled-out treatment.
After filling in a new client form, the massage therapist Simon came out to collect me and greeted me by name. For someone who knows nothing about reading people’s energy his was absolutely electric. He was warm and bubbly and instantly put you at ease. It was hardly the aloof spiritual character I was expecting.
Simon led me to the massage room where he asked me to take a seat. He proceeded to give me a bit of an overview of his background as a trained massage therapist and the kind of treatment he would perform on me.
With over 15 years of experience as a masseur, Simon has combined his love for traditional muscular massages, with his personal passion for eastern energy healing. He said each treatment would be a bespoke experience to suit the client’s needs. I will admit, I didn’t quite know what that meant but the personalisation definitely appealed to me.
Simon then proceeded to ask me a serious of questions. He touched on everything from:
- what do you do?
- Do you sit at a desk all day?
- How often do you exercise?
- What kind of exercise do you do?
- Do you experience any pain?
- Are you feeling a bit stressed at the moment?
- Where do you feel you carry your stress?
- How are your sleep patterns?
- What is your diet like?
For the most part my answers were fairly generic. I had been a bit slack on exercising lately. I told him about the shocking migraines I’d experienced a few weeks prior which I attributed to a stiff neck. I also mentioned that it was a few weeks before Christmas so I was definitely indulging in a bit too much rich food and red wine so I felt like I was a bit tired from burning the candle at both ends.
Simon agreed that December is typically a stressful time of year for everyone especially as you try to indulge in silly season festivities while trying to wrap up everything at work. Without touching me he could tell I looked a bit drained. He explained that physical and emotional pain sit quite close to one another on the body. Stress and tension for instance can present as physical pain as it is intertwined with emotional pain. He also told me that everyone carries stress differently and that there would be areas on my body that he would massage that would feel more tender than others. This is where the bespoke nature of his treatment comes into play.
Simon told me he would combine a traditional deep tissue massage with some reikiand crystal healing to help align my chakra. I’ve heard a lot of buzz recently about Reiki treatments but didn’t know anything about it. Simon explained that Reiki is a healing technique where the therapist channels energy into the client by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being. That description sounded vague to me, but I was convinced I needed to maintain an open and positive attitude if I wanted to get the most out of my treatment.
Simon left me to get changed and settled onto the massage bed. When he came back into the room, he covered my entire body with towels and began placing pressure on various parts of my body. He asked me to follow his guidance and to focus on breathing deeply. He also asked me to set an intention for the massage and asked me to consistently refer back to my intention if my mind started to wonder. I used my New Years Resolution as my intention, ‘focus on having a powerful and positive 2019’. With deep breathes, a clear intention and a firm pressure Simon began his massage in long, sweeping strokes. I instantly melted into a relaxed, half-sleep state.
It sounds funny to type this now, because at the time it felt so normal but throughout the massage Simon would gently chant or deep breathe with you which perfectly accompanied a very hypnotic soundtrack that he had playing throughout the room. He made ‘wooshing’ sounds where his hands would mimic his breath. The breathing, I quickly realised was one of the most important parts of the massage as it helped Simon to unleash knots and helped me deal with moments of muscular pain. I could literally feel my back relaxing with each pressure point he touched. I noticed in particular how much tension I was holding around my neck and shoulders. Simon focused on this area for what felt like 20 minutes. He would accompany each sore pressure point with some very soothing long strokes which seemed to distract from the temporary pain. It was a good pain though, one that felt needed to be released.
Simon then moved on to my legs and feet. Certain parts of my legs felt bruised they were that sensitive and Simon worked quickly to stretch and massage the muscles until my legs felt like jelly.
By the time Simon asked me to turn over, I had no concept of how long I’d been lying there for. I didn’t doze off but I did feel like a ragdoll. Simon’s continual prompts to breathe really helped to keep you mentally accountable throughout the treatment.
When I was lying on my back Simon placed a serious of crystals in a straight line from my face to me neck and then to my stomach. He explained as he went which stone, he was placing on me and why…. although I will admit the details of these are a bit hazy to me. I do know he placed a rose quartz on my neck and near my belly button. The stones were cool and felt great against my skin. After massaging sections of my body he would make a point to come back to these crystals and gently apply pressure to them while he monitored my deep breath.
Simon also used herbal tonics which he could mist over your body. The one that stood out the most was white sage for clarity. It gave me an instant burst of energy.
Simon finished his treatment with a neck and scalp massage which I can only describe as dreamy. So dreamy in fact I don’t even remember him leaving the room once the treatment was complete. A few minutes later I opened my eyes and was zapped back to life like I had been electronically rebooted. I took my time to get dressed and met Simon back out in the waiting room where he had prepared me a hydration elixir from The Beauty Chef and a homemade cacao and date bliss ball.
Simon instructed me to stay really well hydrated for the rest of the day and to avoid caffeine and alcohol and to go to sleep early. He told me that the tension I had in my shoulders and neck could cause a temporary headache, but that was a healthy sign of my body releasing the tension. He advised me to allow the headache to happen rather than numb it with medication and to just drink water to see it through.
My 90-minute treatment felt like half a day and I left the clinic feeling like I was floating on a cloud. I felt very zen and relaxed and totally unprepared to re-join the hustle and bustle of the real world.
Although I wasn’t sure what the crystals, the chanting or the herbal sprays actually did, I can say it felt wonderful and relaxing which is ultimately all I was looking for from the treatment. Physically I felt stretched and softened and I had one of the best nights sleep I’ve had in months. I also woke up bursting with energy, which again I haven’t experienced in a while.
Simon himself is incredibly talented. He has hands of magic and when you combine that with the chanting and the breathing it really is an excellent performance where he delivers a world class treatment. While I may not be a complete alternative therapy convert, I am convinced his treatment is 100% worth experiencing. I think it’s important to approach the treatment with an open mind and to place your trust in him by listening and following his instructions. Hopefully you’ll feel that fabulous floating sensation too.
